Fiction
Whorticulture
As a girl waits for the return of her father lost at sea, the stories of four women unravel. A daydreamer gets an education in Porkopolis; a storekeeper in Gold Rush San Francisco falls in love with a thief; a fugitive slave re-invents herself in a New York brothel; and a young bride is isolated on a Louisiana sugar plantation with her violent husband.
Peopled by riverboat gamblers, con artists, poets, whores, liars, art lovers, and cowards, with allusions to the coded language of flowers, Whorticulture is a story of migration and consequence in mid-nineteenth century America.
