Marie-Anne Mancio, Biography
I’m a professional writer interested in process and contradiction.
I write about art, deception, and re-invention, about liars, thieves, whores, conmen, and outsiders.
My doctoral thesis on live art was called 'Maps for Wayward Performers' (the work of Forced Entertainment, Rose English, Annie Griffin, Bobby Baker, Mary Duffy, and Susan Lewis) and I still write about art and performance (previously for Live Art Magazine, Art and Design, Make, lately for RealTime and The Public Gallery). My current research interest is British performance art group 'The Ting: Theatre of Mistakes' with curator Jason E Bowman.
My favorite film-maker is Peter Greenaway. I performed in his installation "In the Dark" as one of the ‘Actors who are Twins’ I also modelled for painter Wendy Elia’s 'Half-Naked' and 'The Visit' series.
I have a Distinction in the M.Phil Creative Writing, University of Glasgow. My writerly vices include American spelling and a love of the Oxford comma.
I taught art history and critical theory at Tate Modern and at the City Literary Institute.
I investigated prostitution as a feminist position and concurred with Simone de Beauvoir.
My great-grandmother was Uruguayan. I like living in more than one place. My suitcase would contain: Jeanette Winterson’s 'Gut Symmetries,' David Mitchell’s 'Cloud Atlas,' Dostoyevsky’s 'Crime and Punishment,' Italo Calvino’s 'Invisible Cities,' Truman Capote’s 'Breakfast at Tiffany’s,' a collection of Borges, and a Sophie Calle catalogue.
I am represented by literary agent Lesley Thorne at Aitken Alexander Associates.
Published stories include: “Noir et Blanc” in Outside of a Dog: an anthology of best new writing and “She Wore Blue Velveteen” for Demos’ Glasgow 2020 project.
